How does the electric shaft generator work?
The electric shaft generator supplies the on-board power grid with energy from the propulsion engine. A permanent magnet motor and inverter convert the kinetic energy of the propulsion motor into a DC bus voltage. From there, a second inverter and transformer generate a stable 3P+N onboard grid. The output voltage and frequency is thus independent of the speed of the propulsion motor. The DC bus in this arrangement offers the possibility of battery installation and energy storage.
