Hydraulic system cable laying vessel
The hydraulic systems consist of four different HPUs (Hydraulic Power Units) that drive the hydraulic cylinders of the wheel tensioners, track tensioners and loading cranes. The wheel tensioners are used for loading a new power cable into the carousel. The track tensioners are used for controlled laying of the cable on the seabed. While the cranes guide the new cable to be loaded from the shore to the cable carousel on the ship.

More about this project
The wheels and tracks of the tensioners are electrically driven. The desired force between the wheel pairs and tracks is hydraulically controlled by double-acting cylinders in combination with Motrac Industries' developed tensioner systems.
Two HPUs (Hydraulic Power Units) powering the loading cranes and tensioner cylinders both consist of two redundant electrically driven Linde HPR open circuit load sensing pumps, a manifold with pressure limiting and shut off valves, cooler and various tank fittings, such as: return roller filters and special DNV approved gauge glasses for marine applications. These components are mounted in a robust lifting frame, so everything is convenient and safe to install and remains fully protected.
In consultation with the customer, two more compact HPUs were designed to be integrated on tensioner frames themselves. This has the advantage that these installations are fully factory assembled and tested, eliminating the need for on-board piping. Since these tensioners are partially on top of the deck, the hydraulic system components were placed inside the tank as much as possible to make them resistant to all environmental conditions.
