Hydraulic Davit System

Ships are equipped with hydraulic Davit systems for controlled release of lifeboats overboard. This project allowed us to equip a cruise ship with as many as 18 Davit systems.

More about this project

When the lifeboat is thrown overboard, two hydraulic cylinders synchronously move the arms outward. These 18 lifeboats have a maximum capacity of 450 people per boat and weigh up to 55 tons each when loaded.

For safe and controlled descending motion, several safety features are incorporated. For example, Bucher Cindy load holding valves are included to allow everything to be lowered in a fully regulated manner.

Once the lifeboat hits the water, the tension in the hook reduces and automatically opens, leaving the boat free.

The hydraulic energy required to unfold the arms and raise the winch is completely stored in hydraulic accumulators in combination with additional nitrogen bottles. So that even in cases of emergency and loss of supply voltage, the lifeboats still descend safely.

The required accumulator sets are pressure monitored and automatically recharged by electrically driven Linde HPR 55cc pump sets.
